The Manipur High Court removes the ruling that included Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

The ethnic conflicts between the tribal Kukis and the majority Meitei's are thought to have been started by the order of March 27, 2023.

The Manipur High Court made a big development on Wednesday when it removed a paragraph from its March 27, 2023 judgment. In that order, the high court suggested that the state government take into consideration adding the majority Meitei population to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.

The events of March 27, 2023, are seen as the trigger for the ethnic tensions between the dominant Meitei population and the tribal Kukis in Manipur. On a recent Wednesday, the Manipur High Court took a substantial step forward by removing a section from its March 27, 2023, ruling. The court had suggested in that order that the state government explore the possibility of including the Meitei community, which constitutes the majority, in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.

The deleted portion was found in paragraph 17(iii) of the judgment. It originally stated: "The first respondent should promptly examine the petitioners' case for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe list, preferably within a four-week period from the receipt of this order. This examination should align with the contentions presented in the writ petition and follow the precedent set by the Gauhati High Court's order in W.P.(C) No. 4281 of 2002 dated 26.05.2003."
